The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is adopting preventive services recommended by the Institute of Medicine at no extra cost. Some of the most notable services include HPV testing, STI counseling, contraception and counseling, breastfeeding support and supplies, and screening and counseling for domestic violence. All of these and more will be covered under health insurance plans without having to pay a co-pay, co-insurance, or deductible. Of course, there is one little speed bump for some women looking for access sans co-pay: health plans sponsored by certain religious bodies are exempt from covering contraceptive services.
A good article on Jezebel delves deeper into this (ongoing, ongoing) issue. Although, I must say, despite the usual opposition (which is to be expected), this is nevertheless rather exciting news.
